Jumbo Cantaloupe
Jumbo Cantaloupe
80-90 days. The Planters Jumbo variety of cantaloupe is a large melon, weighing four to five pounds, with a sweet taste. The vine produces melons that reach maturity in eighty to ninety days. These seeds do best with full sun, in zones three to nine. Rich, sandy soil is preferable. Planters Jumbo does well in wet or dry conditions and is a favorite with growers. Firm rind and sweet, deep orange flesh. This melon variety was developed to grow in hot humid climates and is resistant to Powdery and Downy Mildew. Melons are 7 by 6 inches and average 4 to 5 pounds each.
The Planters Jumbo cantaloupe melon thrives in rich and sandy soil with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
Loosen up the soil with a garden tool before sowing, and add some extra compost on top of the soil to be sure that it has the proper nutrients for vine growth.
The soil should be kept moist, so water vines consistently each week, making sure to do so near the soil surface to keep the vines themselves dry and intact.
These vines need warm weather and full sun.
Sow them outdoors in a warm environment, or sow them indoors and transplant them after the threat of frost has passed. Sow the seeds in rows three to five feet apart with plants around two to three feet apart. Cover each seed with half an inch of soil. As the vines begin to produce melons, trim off any flowers or smaller melons that grow. This will keep the plants energy directed at producing large and juicy melons.
When the melons are ready to be harvested, which will happen between 80 and 90 days, they should be at their full size, turning slightly golden. They should be easily pulled off of the plant. They will keep for a few weeks after they are harvested in cool conditions
