Great Blue Lobelia is a 2' to 3' tall native perennial with native distribution over all of the Eastern US except for Florida. The flowers are in dense leafy terminal racemes. The showy flowers are bright blue, two lipped, tubular, and have faint white stripes on the tubes. Great Lobelia prefers medium to wet soils and will perform well in full sun or part shade. It is usually found growing in wet meadows, ditches, along streams and in low wet woods and thickets. It is used in borders, native plant gardens, woodland gardens, along edges of ponds and water features, and in wildflower meadows. The botanical name specific is from the prior medicinal use of the plant in the treatment of syphilis. The plant is a must for butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
